MEET JAY UNDERWOOD

Biography
Jay was born and raised in the Chattanooga area. He graduated from Southern Adventist University in 2007. He attended law school at the University of Memphis and graduated in 2010.
Jay began his legal career primarily focusing on criminal defense. In 2014, he joined the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office. He has extensive experience in criminal law and has detailed knowledge of the criminal defense process, from arrest all the way through appeal.
While at the Public Defender’s Office, Jay handled many of the office’s most serious cases, was a Division Leader and supervised appeals. He has successfully litigated serious trials and motions and has earned the respect of judges and other criminal defense attorneys. Jay has also successfully handled cases at the Court of Criminal Appeals, persuading the Court to reverse two separate murder convictions. He has also been admitted to practice in Federal Court in the Eastern District of Tennessee and is also licensed in Georgia.
Jay primarily handles State and Federal Criminal Defense.

My biggest fear when I was charged with DUI was having to do jail time. I hired Houston & Alexander, and they worked on my case for about a year and a half. Due the stress of this pandemic and the loss of employment, my wife and I got into an argument and I ended up getting arrested and charged with domestic violence. I could not go home, could not have any contact with my wife and had no place to live. An elected official/friend referred me to Johnny Houston and his law firm. I had too much to drink one night and backed into another car. I was charged with second offense DUI and felony reckless endangerment. I was at a real low point in my life and my husband had recently passed away. Johnny was able to get the felonies dismissed and I pled guilty to a first offense. Instead of facing significant jail time and a felony, I did a few days in jail and wore an alcohol monitor. We were from out of town and had no friends or family in the area. Things got out of control and the next morning we were arrested and charged with Felonies. In my opinion, we were over charged.
